The American Bar Association’s Death Penalty Representation Project honored Carrington Coleman and the Denver firm of Lewis Roca Rothgerber with the 2013 Exceptional Service Award for the pro bono representation of Manuel Velez, who was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in 2008. Partners Lyndon Bittle and Neil Burger, along with several other Carrington Coleman lawyers, have worked for over four years with the Rothgerber attorneys from to discover, develop, and present evidence demonstrating that Mr. Velez’s conviction was the product of misleading medical testimony and the ineffective assistance of his trial counsel. That effort resulted in a trial court’s order granting Mr. Velez a new trial, which was upheld by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
